This Thursday September 8, ICON Aircraft executives will announce they are setting up a manufacturing facility in Tijuana, Baja California for the production of the complete composite airframe for the ICON A5 light sport aircraft. ICON expects the facility to be complete early 2017.
ICON’s Tijuana facility will deliver composite structures to their California facility for final assembly and flight test.
ICON Aircraft is an enterprise that manufactures consumer sport aircraft in response to the sport aviation category created by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). ICON’s mission is to reinvent personal aviation by building aircraft that are advanced, safe, and easy to use, thereby bringing the freedom, fun, and adventure of flying of those who have always dreamed of it.
ICON’s first model is the A5, an amphibious sport aircraft that fuses exceptional aeronautical engineering with world-class design. It has won several international design awards and has attracted followers from all over the world. The company has received over 1,800 deposits for aircraft.
To meet the demand, ICON is initiating serial production and has selected Tijuana as a site for composite production because of its established industrial infrastructure, skilled labor force, and proximity to ICON’s aircraft assembly facility in California.
With an investment of over $150 million dollars, and a workforce over 1,000 people, ICON is making a significant investment in Tijuana that will benefit the city and the country.
The company presentation will occur on Thursday, September 8 at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) terrace, at 6 P.M. Speakers will include ICON Founder and CEO Kirk Hawkins and other company executives, as well as officials from the government and business community leaders from.
There will also be a press conference held for the media to learn about the details of sport flying, aircraft manufacturing, and an A5 will also be on display.
